Should You Offer Payment Plans for Your Online Course?
A payment plan splits the price into installments so more buyers can say yes. When to offer one, how to price it, and what happens when a payment fails.
A payment plan lets a buyer pay for a course in installments, for example three monthly payments instead of one. For a higher-priced course it can be the difference between "not now" and "yes".
This guide covers when payment plans make sense, how to price them, what they cost you in fees, and how to handle failed payments and access.
The short answer
Offer a payment plan when your course costs more than many buyers can pay at once, usually a few hundred dollars or more. Split it into two to six monthly payments, charge a little more in total than the one-time price to cover fees and risk, and decide in advance what happens to access if a payment fails.
Key takeaways
- Payment plans help most on higher-priced courses and programs.
- Two to six installments is the common range; longer plans raise the risk of missed payments.
- Charging slightly more in total than the pay-in-full price is common and rewards paying upfront.
- On Stripe, recurring payments through Stripe Billing add 0.7% on top of card fees.
- Write down your failed-payment and access rules before you sell.

When should you offer a payment plan?
- The price is high relative to what your buyers usually spend on learning.
- Your buyers are people whose budgets run month to month: freelancers, students, career changers.
- Interviews or sales calls keep hearing "I want it, but not all at once".
For low-priced courses, a plan adds admin and fees for little gain.
How do you price a payment plan?
Many creators set the plan's total a little above the pay-in-full price. It covers the extra fees and the risk of missed payments, and gives buyers a reason to pay upfront.
| Example (illustration) | Pay in full | 3-payment plan | 6-payment plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Course priced at $600 | $600 once | 3 × $210 = $630 | 6 × $110 = $660 |
Show both options side by side on the sales page, with the total for each.
What do payment plans cost in fees?
Each installment is a separate card charge, so the fixed part of the card fee repeats: on Stripe in the US, 2.9% + 30¢ per charge. Installments run as recurring payments, which Stripe Billing prices at 0.7% of the amount on top. Check your platform's own fees for plans too; some add an extra percentage for subscriptions and payment plans.
What happens if a student's payment fails?
Decide before you sell, and say it in your terms:
- Retry: retry the card over several days and email the student a link to update it.
- Pause: pause access to new lessons until the payment goes through.
- Keep what they've paid for: some creators keep earlier modules open; others pause the whole course.
- Finish: once every installment is paid, access should continue as if they paid in full.
Is a payment plan the same as a subscription?
No. A payment plan has a fixed number of payments and ends; the buyer then owns the same access as someone who paid in full. A subscription continues until cancelled, and access usually ends when it does. If you sell subscriptions to consumers in places like California, automatic-renewal laws set rules on disclosure and cancellation. See membership vs one-time pricing.
Frequently asked questions
How many payments should a course payment plan have?
Two to six is common. Fewer installments mean less risk of missed payments; more make each payment smaller. Match it to your price and your buyers' budgets.
Should a payment plan cost more than paying in full?
It's common to charge slightly more in total to cover extra fees and the risk of missed payments, and to reward people who pay upfront. Show both totals clearly.
Can students get a refund on a payment plan?
Follow the same refund policy as for full payments, applied to what they've paid. State it clearly before purchase.
Do payment plans increase course sales?
They can, especially at higher prices, because the first payment is smaller. Test it: offer the plan and compare conversion with and without it.
