Online Course Certificates: How to Create and Issue Them

A certificate of completion rewards students who finish and gives them something to share. What to include, how to make it verifiable, and how to word it honestly.

A certificate of completion is a document saying a student finished your course. It gives students a reason to reach the end and something to show for it, and every one posted on LinkedIn is a small advertisement for you.

This guide covers what a certificate should say, when to issue it, how to make it verifiable, and the honest line between a certificate of completion and an accredited qualification.

The short answer

To issue online course certificates, decide what earns one (finishing every lesson, passing a final quiz, or an approved project), design a certificate with the student's name, course title, completion date and your name, and give each one a unique verification link. Call it a certificate of completion, not accreditation, unless an accrediting body has approved your course.

Key takeaways

  • Tie the certificate to a real requirement: all lessons done, a passing final quiz, or an approved assignment.
  • Include the student's name, course title, date, issuer and a unique ID or verification link.
  • A public verification page lets employers check it's genuine.
  • LinkedIn members can add a certification with the issuing organization, dates, a credential ID and URL.
  • Accreditation applies to institutions and programs reviewed by recognized bodies; a creator's completion certificate isn't accredited.

What should a course certificate include?

  • The student's full name, as they want it shown.
  • The course title, and the outcome or skills covered if space allows.
  • The completion date.
  • Your name or school's name, and a signature.
  • A unique certificate ID and a verification link.
  • Optionally, the hours of study or the assessment passed.

When should a student earn a certificate?

Pick a requirement that matches what the certificate implies:

RequirementWhat the certificate showsGood for
Finished every lessonAttendance and persistenceMost self-paced courses
Passed a final quizKnowledge of the materialCourses with clear right answers
Approved project or assignmentAbility to do the skillPractical, outcome-based courses

Issue it automatically the moment the requirement is met; a certificate that arrives a week later loses most of its motivating effect. For setting a quiz requirement, see how to write course quiz questions.

How do you make a certificate verifiable?

Give each certificate a unique ID and a public page at a stable link that shows the student's name, the course, the date and that it's valid. Anyone the student shares it with can check it, which makes it worth more than a PDF anyone could edit.

How do students add a course certificate to LinkedIn?

LinkedIn members add certifications from their profile's Licenses & certifications section, with the name, issuing organization, issue and expiry dates, a credential ID and a credential URL. Tell students to put the verification link in the credential URL field and your school as the issuer. LinkedIn also offers course providers a free "Add to Profile" button, but its help page says the button no longer fills in certificate details automatically, so spell out what to enter on the certificate page.

Is an online course certificate accredited?

Usually not, and you shouldn't imply it is. In the US, the Department of Education explains that accreditation is a review of institutions and programs by recognized private accrediting agencies; the Department itself doesn't accredit anyone. So a certificate of completion from an independent creator shows a student finished your course; it isn't a degree, license or accredited credential.

Some professions accept continuing-education credits from approved providers. If yours does, check that body's approval process before you use its name.

Frequently asked questions

Are online course certificates worth anything?

They show a student finished your course, and a verifiable one is easy for an employer to check. Their weight depends on your reputation and the skills tested, not the certificate itself.

Can I issue certificates for my online course legally?

Yes. Anyone can issue a certificate of completion for their own course. Don't call it accredited or a license unless a recognized body has approved it.

What is the difference between a certificate and a certification?

A certificate of completion shows someone finished a course. A certification usually means passing an independent exam set by a professional body, often with renewal requirements.

Should certificates expire?

Completion certificates usually don't. Add an expiry only if the skill goes out of date, such as software versions or regulations.
