How Much to Charge for Coaching: Rates, Data and a Formula
Coaches charged an average of $244 per one-hour session in the ICF's last public fee data. What that means for you, and a formula to set your own rate.
Coaching rates range from free "practice" sessions to thousands of dollars for executive programs, so averages alone won't set your price. They do tell you what's normal, and they show which factors move a rate up.
This guide uses the International Coaching Federation's (ICF) Global Coaching Study, the largest regular survey of coaches, then walks through a simple formula and how to price packages and raise rates.
The short answer
Coaches charged an average of $244 per one-hour session worldwide in 2022, according to the ICF's 2023 Global Coaching Study: $272 in North America, $277 in Western Europe and $114 in Latin America. To set your own rate, divide your yearly income goal plus costs by the paid sessions you can realistically fill, then check it against your niche.
Key takeaways
- Average fee per one-hour session in 2022: $244 globally (ICF 2023 study, 14,591 responses).
- Fees rise with experience, a business or executive niche, and clients whose employer pays.
- Over half of coaches (53%) earned under $30,000 a year from coaching, so averages hide a wide spread.
- Price from your income goal and realistic number of paid sessions, not from your hourly wage in a job.
- Packages and programs let you charge for the outcome, not the minutes.

How much do coaches charge per hour?
The ICF's 2023 Global Coaching Study, run with PwC, surveyed coaches from October to December 2022. Its public executive summary reports these average fees for a one-hour session:
| Region | Average fee per one-hour session (2022) | Average yearly revenue from coaching |
|---|---|---|
| North America | $272 | $67,800 |
| Western Europe | $277 | $52,400 |
| Oceania | $259 | $58,800 |
| Asia | $226 | $33,900 |
| Middle East and Africa | $165 | $29,600 |
| Eastern Europe | $138 | $18,700 |
| Latin America and the Caribbean | $114 | $22,900 |
| Global | $244 | $52,800 |
The ICF's 2025 study counted a record 122,974 coach practitioners and $5.34 billion in annual revenue, but its fee figures are only in the full report, so the 2022 fees above are the latest published ones we could check.
Why do coaching rates vary so much?
The same summary names the factors linked to higher fees:
- Experience: more experienced coaches report higher fees, more clients and more hours.
- Niche: business coaching (leadership, executive, organizational and small business) earns above-average fees.
- Who the client is: coaches who mainly serve executives command the highest hourly fees.
- Who pays: the more clients whose coaching is paid by an employer or sponsor, the higher the fee.
Averages also hide a wide spread: 53% of coaches reported less than $30,000 a year from coaching. Many coach part-time; the average coach spent 11.9 hours a week on coaching work and had 12.2 active clients.
How do you calculate your coaching rate?
Start from what you need to earn, not from what feels comfortable to ask:
- Set a yearly income goal from coaching, before tax.
- Add your yearly costs: software, training, insurance, marketing, payment fees.
- Estimate paid sessions you can fill. Count weeks you'll work and realistic sessions per week, not your maximum.
- Divide income goal plus costs by paid sessions. That's your minimum session rate.
- Check the market: compare with coaches in your niche and region, and adjust for your experience and proof.
Illustration, not data: a coach who wants $60,000 a year, spends $6,000 on costs, and expects to fill 10 paid sessions a week for 44 weeks has 440 sessions. $66,000 ÷ 440 = $150 per session. At 6 sessions a week the same goal needs $250.
Notice how much time coaching takes beyond the calls. Spread over all the hours coaches reported working as a coach, the ICF's figures come to $85 of revenue per hour, far below the $244 session fee. Marketing, admin and preparation are unpaid time your rate has to cover. Klasira's free coaching rate calculator runs this math for you.
Should you charge per session or per package?
| Pricing | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Per session | Easy to buy; low commitment | Clients come and go; you sell your time by the hour |
| Package (e.g. 6 sessions) | Priced on the outcome; steadier income | Needs a clear result to sell |
| Monthly retainer | Recurring revenue; ongoing support | Must keep delivering value or clients cancel |
| Group program | Lower price per person, higher total per hour | Needs enough clients to fill a group |
Most established coaches sell packages or programs and keep single sessions as an entry point. A package price is usually less than the same number of single sessions bought one at a time, which gives clients a reason to commit.
How much should a new coach charge?
New coaches often start below their region's average while they gather results and testimonials, then raise prices in steps. Avoid pricing so low that you need more clients than you can find or serve: a very cheap rate can also signal that you're not confident. A common path is a lower rate for a few pilot clients in exchange for feedback, then your full rate.
When should you raise your coaching rates?
- Your calendar is regularly full or has a waiting list.
- Almost everyone you quote says yes without hesitation.
- You have specific client results you can show.
- Your niche has moved toward business clients or sponsored coaching.
Raise prices for new clients first, give current clients notice and, if you like, a period at their old rate. Small regular increases are easier than one big jump.
Do payment fees change what you should charge?
They should be in your costs. Stripe's standard US card price, for example, is 2.9% plus 30 cents per successful domestic charge, more for international cards. On a $150 session that's about $4.65. Platforms that also take a percentage of each sale add to it, so check what yours takes. See how to price an online course for the same thinking applied to courses.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average hourly rate for a life coach?
The ICF reports fees for all coaches, not life coaches separately: $244 per one-hour session globally in 2022, and $272 in North America. Life and wellness coaches often charge less than business and executive coaches.
How much should I charge for coaching as a beginner?
Work out your minimum rate from your income goal, costs and realistic number of paid sessions, then start a little below the average for your niche and raise it as you gather results.
How much do executive coaches charge?
More than average: the ICF found that coaches who mainly serve executives command the highest hourly fees, and fees rise with the share of clients whose employer pays.
Should I list my coaching prices publicly?
Listing prices saves time and filters out poor fits. Coaches selling large custom programs often show a starting price and confirm details on a call.
How do I price a coaching package?
Price the outcome: estimate the sessions and support it takes, multiply by your session rate, then set a package price slightly below the single-session total.
