8 min read

Gumroad is the simplest way to start selling a download, an ebook or a small course: no monthly plan, no setup, just a fee on each sale. That's also why "how much does Gumroad take?" matters more here than on any subscription platform. The fee is the whole price.

Here are Gumroad's fees and payout rules from its pricing page and help center, checked on October 30, 2026, with what they cost on a real year of sales.

The short answer

Gumroad charges no monthly fee. It takes 10% + 50¢ of each sale through your profile or direct links, plus card processing of 2.9% + 30¢ (or PayPal's fee). Sales through its Discover marketplace cost a flat 30%, processing included. Once paid sales pass $20,000 in a calendar month, new direct sales drop to 5% + 50¢.

Key takeaways

  • No plans or monthly fees: Gumroad takes 10% + 50¢ per direct sale. Card processing (2.9% + 30¢) or PayPal's fee comes on top.
  • Discover marketplace sales cost a flat 30%, which includes processing.
  • High-volume discount: once paid sales reach $20,000 in a calendar month, new direct sales that month are 5% + 50¢. It resets on the 1st.
  • Gumroad has collected and remitted sales tax worldwide as merchant of record since January 1, 2025.
  • Payouts need a $100 balance and can be weekly, monthly or quarterly (daily for eligible US sellers). PayPal payouts cost 2%; US instant payouts cost 3%.

Gumroad plans and prices

Gumroad has no plans to choose between. Every seller pays the same per-sale fees, set by where the sale comes from.

How much does Gumroad take per sale?

For a sale through your Gumroad profile or a link you share, Gumroad's help center says it charges 10% + 50¢ per transaction, and that this doesn't include card processing (2.9% + 30¢) or PayPal's fees. On a $50 ebook, that's $5.50 to Gumroad and about $1.75 to processing, so you keep about $42.75, or 85.5%.

The 50¢ matters more on cheap products: on a $5 template, Gumroad and processing take about $1.45, or 29%.

Since January 1, 2025, Gumroad has been the merchant of record: it collects and remits sales tax and VAT on your sales worldwide, so you don't register for them yourself. Gumroad's help page words the fee as 10% + 50¢ "+ sales tax" per transaction; the CSV export of your sales breaks down the exact fee on each one.

What is Gumroad's Discover fee?

Gumroad's marketplace, Discover, can put your product in front of buyers browsing Gumroad. Those sales cost a flat 30%, with processing included. Only sales from new customers who find you through Discover pay it; your own audience's purchases through your profile or links stay at 10% + 50¢.

30% is a lot, but it's a fee on sales you wouldn't otherwise have, and Gumroad pays the processing. Treat Discover as a paid acquisition channel.

Does Gumroad have a discount for high volume?

Yes, and it's new since many reviews were written. Once your paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, new direct sales that month cost 5% + 50¢ instead of 10% + 50¢. It applies automatically, resets on the 1st of each month, and a refund that takes you back under $20,000 returns new sales to 10% + 50¢. Discover sales stay at 30%.

The discount rewards big launches more than steady sales: $60,000 spread evenly over a year never reaches the threshold, while a $40,000 launch month pays 5% on about half of it.

How does Gumroad pay you?

Sales collect in your Gumroad balance and are paid out by bank deposit in your local currency in most countries, or by PayPal where banks aren't supported. You need at least $100 (higher in some countries), and you can choose weekly, monthly or quarterly payouts; daily payouts are for US sellers with eligible bank accounts after 4 payouts. On those schedules, each sale is held for at least 7 days, and payouts cover sales made through the previous Friday.

  • Bank payouts take 2 to 7 business days, depending on the country.
  • PayPal payouts are in US dollars, usually arrive in 1 to 3 business days, and carry a 2% payout fee.
  • US creators can take instant payouts of up to $10,000 for a 3% fee, after at least one payout and 60 days of processing.
  • If you connect your own PayPal account, PayPal sales are credited to it at the time of sale.

Are Gumroad's fees refunded, and who pays on affiliate sales?

When you refund a sale, Gumroad returns its own fee on the refunded part and keeps only the processing portion, which processors don't return. On affiliate sales, fees are split in proportion to the commission: if an affiliate earns 30%, they bear 30% of the fees.

How Gumroad's fees compare with Klasira

Gumroad costs nothing until you sell, which suits a first product. Once sales are steady, a flat subscription usually costs less than 10% + 50¢ a sale: Klasira takes 0% of each sale and pays it into your own Stripe account, though, unlike Gumroad, it doesn't file sales tax for you or bring buyers from a marketplace.

Klasira: 0% transaction fees on every plan, with each sale paid into your own Stripe account. Plan prices are on Klasira's pricing page; we leave them out here so this post doesn't go stale when they change.
