Teachable is one of the longest-running course platforms, known for being easy to start on, its student apps and a payment system that handles sales tax for you. Its pricing looks simple, three plans from $39 a month, but the cheapest plan carries a 7.5% fee on every sale, and features such as certificates sit higher up than many people expect.

Prices are in US dollars. Yearly billing saves $120, $240 or $600 a year, and every plan has a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

How much does Teachable cost per month?

Teachable Starter costs $39 a month, Builder $89 and Growth $189 on monthly billing. Billed yearly, they're $29, $69 and $139 a month: $348, $828 and $1,668 a year. Above Growth, a Custom plan for organizations is priced by Teachable's sales team.

Every plan includes iOS and Android student apps, AI creation tools, auto-graded quizzes, drip content, memberships, coupons, upsells and order bumps, abandoned cart emails, bundles, Teachable Payments with tax handling and up to 1TB of video storage. Student apps on the cheapest plan are a genuine Teachable strength: Thinkific and LearnWorlds sell branded apps as add-ons.

What does each Teachable plan include?

Teachable's pricing page isn't fully consistent on certificates: the plan cards and comparison table put them on Growth, while the page's structured data lists course certificates on Starter and Builder too. If certificates matter, confirm with Teachable before you buy a lower plan.

Does Teachable charge transaction fees?

Yes on Starter: 7.5% of every sale. Builder, Growth and Custom charge 0% when you use Teachable Payments. Processing comes on top on every plan:

BackOffice is Teachable's optional service for paying collaborators such as co-authors and affiliates, and it costs extra only if you turn it on. On a $200 sale to a US card, Starter takes $15 plus $6.10 in processing; Builder takes only the $6.10.

How does Teachable pay you?

Teachable Payments pays out daily, about two business days after each sale, counting business days only. A new account's first payouts can take up to four to six weeks while Stripe verifies it, and payouts are held if your school earns over $500 before you've submitted tax forms (a W-9 or W-8BEN).

Teachable's pricing page also lists a monthly payment gateway that pays out once a month, for schools that don't use Teachable Payments.

Does Teachable handle sales tax and VAT?

Yes, on Teachable Payments. Every plan includes US sales tax, global VAT and GST handling, and the tax collected from students is remitted separately rather than paid out to you. Is there a free plan or free trial?

No free plan: Teachable's FAQ calls it a paid service with a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. When we checked, the pricing page also showed a special offer of a 30-day trial that rolls into Builder monthly. Treat that as a promotion that may not appear for you.

Which Teachable plan should you choose?

• Starter only while you're testing: at 7.5%, it costs more than Builder once yearly sales pass about $6,400 (or $8,000 on monthly billing).
• Builder for most course sellers: 0% fees, affiliates, email marketing, a community and your own domain.
• Growth if you need certificates, more than 10 products, no Teachable branding or the API.

What it costs on real sales

Example (illustration, not data): $60,000 of course sales in a year, as 300 sales of $200 to US cardholders, on yearly billing where offered. Card processing of about 2.9% + 30¢ a sale (about $1,830 here) comes on top on every platform unless a row says it's included, so it's left out of the totals.

Starter's fee is the whole story here: 7.5% of $60,000 is $4,500 a year, more than five times the cost of Builder.
